SE Asia Trip 2012 – A Day of Snorkeling

Feb 20th

400 baht (~$14) a person well spent on a snorkeling trip around Koh phi phi.

Similar to the Speed Boat tour, we stopped at most of the same places but not in the same order and my experiences at each place were completely different.

here’s a Map of the area and a few of the places we went to (not the same trip but close enough)

Instead of a speed boat, we took a long tail boat. We got to our first destination pretty quickly seeing that we were already at Koh Phi Phi. The boat had 25 ppl on board so it was snug. Lucky for me, I got to share the bench w/ 3 large guys :p

Our tour started at around 11am. It was a beautiful day to be out.

Saw a few kayaks out on the water

Our first stop was monkey beach! And this time, the long tail boat actually docked so we had 10 min to feed and take photos of the monkeys.

The beach was crowded with all the ppl from the other boats but I was able to get some great photos and video of the feeding monkeys.

A funny thing that happened during that stop!! Once we all piled back on the boat and the driver started pulling away, an older couple waved from the beach. They were supposed to be on our boat too!!! Hahaha…

People on the boat were laughing, saying, goodbye see you tomorrow! I couldn’t help but snicker!

At first it looked as if the driver would just pull away! But he stopped where he was, so we signaled for the couple to get on. The couple had to swim to the boat and they were very grateful not to have been left behind at the first stop. Hahaha!

Side note: you’d think they’d learn their lesson after that but they were almost always the last 2 to come onboard. And at our lunch break they were sleeping on the beach! If we hadn’t woken them up… We would have been waving Good bye! Hahahaha!!! We nicknamed them Team USA (the older guy wore a team USA bandana)

Next stop was snorkeling near Moskito island. Who knew fish loved bread do much. Ppl on the boat threw out a slice of bread and the fish went crazy!

I could feel them nibbling at me! Thinking I was bread too.

We passed by Viking cave where they harvest birds nest.

Lunch was on bamboo island. We stopped at a totally different side than the speed boat tour. And we had little styrofoam containers of fried rice to eat. We were glad we packed the sandwiches, and snacks because that fried rice was just an appetizer! LOL

It was nice to sit in the sun after lunch.

Next we went to shark point which is right by Long Beach. A few guys saw sharks, but we didn’t see any!

Maya bay and Maya beach were next. Snorkeling first, but it was pretty shallow, a few guys including Yoni, ended up getting some scrapes.

At the beach, we had an hour and walked around here. We walked past the toilets to find this cool campground and a viewpoint. Didn’t see that last time I was at Maya Beach on the speed boat tour.

The sun was just setting and the longtail boat stopped long enough for us to watch it set. One of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve seen.

Then it was back to Koh Phi Phi Don and time for dinner. What a fantastic day!
