On Feb 12th, we left the quiet beautiful island of Rai Leh taking a long tail boat, then a van, and then a ferry boat to the island of Phi Phi (pronounced Pee Pee) well known for being a great diving destination.
I was feeling tired and had a bad headache probably from the ferry ride so I really just wanted to rest. From the moment we arrived, the island was loud and busy, full of tourists coming from the Full Moon party on Koh pha-nang. They seemed more interested in drinking than diving.
Tattoo shops everywhere but we heard they weren’t very good. They do get busy at 4am when all the drunks want tattoos. LOL!
Cats are everywhere on the island! Kitty island for sure. I’ve nick named a few of the ones that hung around our bungalow. But here are a few pics of random ones.

beach bum cat
Even with all the cats, there was a poster for a missing one!
We’ve noticed a bunch of people are walking around with bandages on the island. We asked one girl and she said she was drunk the night before and didn’t remember. Hahaha…
Our dive instructor said its most likely burns from fire skipping (fire skipping rope) at the Full Moon party. He said the people turning the skipping ropes have some sort of pact with the pharmacies.
They intentionally burn ppl and then direct them to the only pharmacy on the island. WTF!! That would explain why so many bandaged ankles though.
We signed up for our Open Water dive course that evening w/ a place called Moskito Diving. (This place had 17 reviews and all were positive.)

The next day we decided to find different accommodations because of how noisy the area was. People were opening and closing their shops and drunks wandered by when we tried to sleep.
The AC seemed broken too. The only good thing about the place was the wifi. We could prob find a better place if we looked so that’s how we spent the next day.
The dive shop also offered cheap rooms – that would be our last resort.
So for the rest of the day we explored the town and searched for a place to stay but everything in our price range was FULL.
We opted to just stay one nite at the dive shop. For 600 baht that sounded like the best deal at the time too.
We walked to a place called ‘Long beach’ on the other side of the island that evening. It was much quieter and there were a bunch of bungalows around.
A bit out of our price range though. Did some stargazing and long exposure photos. And also saw a lantern go up. I’ve only seen this in that ‘Tangled’ movie. It was an amazing sight (even if just 1 lantern). We didn’t see the ppl lighting the lantern like we did on Rai Leh but seeing it floating up against the night sky was very cool!
We started our dive course at 9am the nxt day so we called it a night after this.
Notes:
– Haven’t found ginger ale anywhere in Thailand, none on this island either.
– No ranch dressing for pizza places. They had mayo out instead. Mayo on pizza?!
- Craving a hamburger? Best not to spend your money here. Maybe just wait till you get home. Was disappointed with the patty I got at one place and the other burger I had was under done and he didn’t ask me before how I wanted it cooked.
- went up to the viewpoint the other day and the ismuth was beautiful!

– There are so many tourists here from all over the world! Mostly European but also Chinese and Malaysian tourists as well.
- Most places can understand and speak basic english. Shops usually use a calculator to show you how much something costs.
- most ppl don’t use their bells on bikes they just say ‘beep beep’. Ppl pushing push carts say the same thing!

– Finding accommodations that were outside of town was a good idea. We were finally able to get a good nite’s sleep. We stayed in these traditional thatched bungalows for a few days
And at Gypsy Bungalow 1 for a few nites too
-we also stayed in a few other places, but only one place had wifi! Even if 2 of the places told us ‘WiFi’ before we actually paid and then turned out it was either a miscommunication or just a plain lie.
Ah just what we need…
Cheap Eats
Noodle soup for 50 baht. The shop is only open in the evenings. The other day it started pouring rain while we ate dinner there. We decided to wait out the rain in the shop watching Thai dramas while enjoying a second helping of chicken soup.

I’ve had Thai pancakes a few times here on Koh phi phi. My fav is mango and chocolate. One time we got one that was really doughy. Mmm, so good.

Orange place is a small mom&pop place that serves both Western and Thai dishes(Thai dishes are better). We ate lunch here a few times during our stay on Koh phi phi.
Melee, a kitten that lives at Orange Place

People from all over the world have eaten here and left msgs about their favorite dishes!
The Green Curry is deelish! And I don’t usually like Thai curries

Street Food- BBQ chicken & a shrimp skewer
Craving something other than Thai food… Ham & pineapple!
Tried the All you can eat BBQ place on the island too
Was happy to have some salad w/ meal
skewers were a lil bland and the veggies on skewer were so-so. Think we preferred the salad.
Overall for a $10 meal it wasn’t bad.
A beachside restaurant plays movies every nite.
One of the Koh Phi Phi streets
Koh Phi Phi was hit hard during the Tsunami in 2004. Much of the island’s buildings were destroyed. They have since been rebuilt.
I saw this Thank you’s board by one of the shops.
