Oh it seems like ages since my last blog post. My apologies! Working and taking classes definitely takes up more time than I anticipated. Even video games have taken a back seat as I find I have less energy and time these days But things will get better after one of my classes ends in the next few weeks (YAY!)

Now back to my story…

The other day one of my co-workers asked me if I’m excited for the next day (Oct 27th). I had to think for a moment because I have been so disconnected with video game news… He was referring to the release of DJ Hero, a Rhythm game released by Activision that is similar to Guitar Hero. DJ Hero (for the Wii, 360 and PS3) lets the player experience the thrill of scratchin’ beats on a turntable (plastic turntable controller). With over 100 songs and different playable DJ characters like DJ AM (who passed away in August), this game has been getting some good reviews.

But not everyone is impressed with the release of another Rhythm Game. The other two guys were like “what is wrong with people? why can’t they just practice on a *real* turntable?” They did make a good point though, there are some people who invest so much time playing Guitar hero and Rock Band that if they used that time to learn to play a real guitar or real instrument, they’d be awesome. One guy complained that it takes so long to set up and take down Rock band that maybe he should just be in a real band. But the funniest comment had to be, “What is the guy supposed to do? Serenade his girlfriend with the plastic guitar?? unplugged, it wouldn’t even make any music…how stupid would that be?” Hahaha
(the guy who said it actually plays Guitar and apparently, is also a romantic at heart because who still serenades their girlfriends under their bedroom windows??)

Plastic instruments or not, rhythm games have proven to be pure entertainment and DJ Hero sounds like it will fit right in.

Are you ready to be a DJ Hero?

You may recall from an old blog post that some of my co-workers found it hilarious that I would go to Comic-con and cut out a newspaper clipping of the Con for me to see when I got back to work after the trip.

About a month ago, one of those co-workers was talking to me about Halo and how he can’t wait to play and maybe just maybe he will take a vacation day off to spend quality time with the game.

Before making a decision to send in his Vacation Request form, he asked our HR friends what would be more ‘nerdy’, taking days off for a convention or taking days off to play a video game. We didn’t reveal who went on the trip (although one of them already knew) or who wanted to play the video game. They thought about it and laughed saying it was a tough choice.

Anyway, after that conversation I was guessing my co-worker submitted his vacation request form and that was that.

Fast forward to this afternoon, he reminded me that Halo 3 launch was tonite and he’d be swinging by any video game store on his way home to grab a copy. He also mentioned that his eyes would most likely be bloodshot tomorrow morning. To which I replied, but I thought you took some days off?? He told me that HR rejected his request!!! Too bad for him, I guess I’ll be seeing him tomorrow and he can tell me all about all the newbs he fragged.

…on my computer, *Finally*

After speaking with AION reps at the NCSoft booth at PAX last weekend, I decided to give it another try on my computer.

The long and arduous task of getting AION to work began with the patch update which took way too long on my machine, followed by several tries of my id/password. I think I changed my password 3 times before AION finally let me in.
The Game Guard 114 error was solved by the deletion of the Game Guard folder in /bin32 and running AION as administrator, even though I was already using the primary user account. Thanks to the tips from the AION Rep!

ah the satisfaction of finally seeing the intro on my machine…

I created my Warrior character in my likeness and started leveling up. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to upgrade the RAM on my computer today because the store I wanted to get RAM from is closed on Sundays :/

This made AION slow down at times, even after I optimized the settings to achieve greater game performance.

Regardless, I started getting the hang of the combat and explored the nearby areas through a few quests. A few times while walking around, random players would cast some spell so that my stats would temporarily increased. I didn’t realize this until the second time as I noticed the two icons on the upper left part of my screen. That was nice of them.

I got a little annoyed when my character died as she became submerged in water. While *trying* to escape from an enemy, walking backwards accidentally into the water with only a sliver of energy left wasn’t a good idea. I was dead instantly. Luckily I wasn’t above Level 5 yet (After Level 5, your XP decreases after resurrecting as a penalty).

I have yet to experience the flying aspect of the game It doesn’t seem likely I will reach Level 10 to get my Wings tonight, but if I can’t sleep, I’ll try to level up some more.

Open Beta ends Monday at 2am.

My PAX Weekend

That’s right, another PAX has come and gone leaving only good memories and swine flu!?

(I was sitting in the Hand Held Lounge on Sunday afternoon and a guy lying on the bean bag not too far away kept coughing, all phlegmy. Gross! I remember thinking “I need to get outta here”. He must have been the patient 0)

Missed Day One

My PAX adventure started a little late this year. To begin with, I had planned to drive down, but due to the car being in an accident and only finding out about it a few days before PAX, plans were changed. I decided I’d get a ride with another PAX-goer but then those plans fell through. To make a long story short, instead of getting there Friday in time for the concerts, I ended up arriving Sat morning instead, taking the first bus out of Vancouver to get to PAX just in time for the Tetris DS Tournament.

Day Two

Only sleeping for a few hours the night before and sitting on a bus for almost 5 hours with nothing to eat or drink, I wasn’t in the best frame of mind when I first got to the convention center. To my dismay he tournament rules were different this year. Everyone was paired off instead of having an 8 player game. I did terrible and lost in the first round. Embarrassing. I do remember some guy saying that the winner from last year was from Canada and how awesome he was at Tetris..hmm I wonder if I know this guy.

After that, I met up with some friends (Rez, Bryan & Neil) to check out the exhibits. Thanks to all the tweets from Friday, it wasn’t a surprise to see that they had expanded the exhibit hall. On the left side of the floor were the Indie games, and inside the actual hall were the other companies. The 1UP booth was located around the same area from what I remembered but they were missing their orange tent and they weren’t taking luggage tag photos this year :/

Inside the Expo Hall…At the NCSoft booth we took photos with the Wings. Mine turned out pretty cool! I complained to the Aion staff about not getting Aion to work on my Vista machine due to the Game guard 114 error. They were well aware of the error and gave me a few suggestions, I have yet to try, but hopefully their suggestions will be the solution I need to get the game to run on my machine.

The Star Trek Online booth was busy. I was waiting in line to try the game but everyone ahead of me was taking so long. Maybe it was the controls, or maybe the confusion about what they were supposed to do. Regardless, the game looked great! I love that it’s Star Trek, but I’m not entirely convinced it will be to my liking. I signed up for the Beta to get my free Klingon T-shirt, and met a girl who asked me to join her women only squad. I told her I’d look them up when I started playing.

The Expo hall was packed with lots to see, some free swag here and there and even free ‘blood’ soda. It’s amazing how hungry one gets walking around at a convention. It was great to run into people I knew(old co-workers and 1UPpers like David,Jen and Kevin) and even those who knew of me (like Davin).

I was glad when it was finally Lunchtime! Link was hungry too

We hung out in the PC Freeplay area where we played everything from Left 4 Dead to Call of Duty. Playing as a zombie in Left for Dead is so much harder than playing as one of the human characters!

OMG sooo many people!

After playing in there for a couple hours, I decided to head back to the hotel for a brief nap. 30min into my nap, a friend called to tell me she just got engaged and invited me to come meet them to celebrate. I bumped into her earlier that day and she said that she suspected her bf might propose, but now it was confirmed. Yes that’s right. My two friends GOT ENGAGED at PAX. He had been waiting to propose to her there, and really wanted to do it in-front of a large audience but he kept getting the run around from the PAX staff on who to talk to to have this announcement made at a panel. So he ended up proposing once the night before and then again during the day at the expo!! No photo of the happy couple though, need to check with them if it’s okay to post it first.

*edit* My friend got back to me and said it would be cool to post a pic, so here it is:

AND to get the details right here’s how the proposal(s) story went: “I had already proposed to Alex on the Friday night, but I wanted to see if I could still propose in front of a large crowd of people (for my ego’s sake) on Saturday. Realizing it was in vain, I proposed in the middle of the song booth/entrance to the queue room which still had a decent 500 people I’d say.”

I stopped by the 1UP meetup later that night but only briefly as another group of my friends and I were headed to dinner. It’s too bad the restaurant was closed to the public or I could have stayed a bit to hangout and meet more 1UPPERs.

The night ended with the Paul and storm and neverending Johnathon Coulton concert. He came back for an encore 3 times!!! I was sooo tired at this point I wanted to pass out…like this guy…

That was one loooonnng day.

Day Three

It was pouring rain when I got up, luckily our hotel was just a few steps from the convention center. We started the day with a Sith smoothie at the Star Wars Cantina. It was a little watery yet refreshing and headed to the Indie games area. I played a few games and bought a few things…although I didn’t get a chance to buy a Castle crashers figurine (they were sold out :/)

Met up with some friends, Jen, Kevin, Philippy next to the 1UP booth where they were handing out free stuff to members. Met Tina and Mike Cruz there and got a Gears of War Xbox 360 faceplate. It’s on my 360 now

Afterwards we headed to the Harmonix booth to play some Beatles Rockband. Philippy as the vocalist was awesome! He even had the perfect english accent (Garden = “Gahden”).

Lunch was at Fox Grill where we reminisced about having drinks there in ‘07 with SuperJenn. We miss you Jenn! The lunch menu included Tetris gaming. Just like old times, except some people were a tad bit rusty it seemed…

Jon and Mike patiently waiting for their food.

Yay! Food has arrived Here’s Jen, Kevin, and Philippy.

I hung out in the Handheld lounge after lunch played some Tetris and Mario Kart, but there was quite a bit of Lag. Most people used the bean bags to take a quick nap. This is where that sickly guy was coughing, spreading his germs…

After the Handheld lounge I played in the console freeplay. I didn’t have patience to wait in the extremely long Omegathon line and figured that my friends would just let me know what the last game would be so I headed to console freeplay to end the expo.

Got together with Jen, Kevin, Philippy, Jon, Mike and others for TMNT 2, drinks and pizza afterwards. That movie is so cheesy! Especially when Vanilla Ice appeared…HAHAHAHA! It was a long and exhausting couple of days.

Random bathroom signs

A few things I ended up with from PAX

Although PAX had a different feel for me this year (there were more crowds, I missed Day One, so many different friends groups were among the attendees and my bro Ryo couldn’t be there), my PAX experience still included some of my favorite parts about the expo – meeting new and old friends, playing games (Console, PC Freeplay and handheld lounge) and concerts! Being surrounded by other people who share the same interests and just having fun is what I’ll remember PAX for. Good times! Hopefully I’ll see you all next year!

Sega Dreamcast’s 10 year anniversary.

10 years ago, on the morning of Sept 9, 1999, my bros and I picked up a Sega Dreamcast on launch day.

I remember seeing a huge orange swirl drawn with chalk on the pavement on campus and thinking, guess we’re not the only ones excited for the launch.

I have mostly good memories of countless hours spent playing games on the Dreamcast. One not so good memory was when my Phantasy Star Online file got corrupted because my bro tried to move my file to another VMU. You remember those little memory units with screens that came in different colors? Mine was a green one to match my green controller.

Such a short life, it’s as if it were all a Dream. The Dreamcast was way ahead of its time, with peripherals like the Dreamcast camera, Samba maracas, microphone(for Seaman) and fishing rod. I used to use the Dreamcast camera as my first camera and webcam. In its prime, the Dreamcast gave players a chance to try some of the most unique Sega games ever. Titles like my favorites, Space Channel 5, Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, Typing of the Dead, Sega Bass Fishing, Crazy Taxi, Samba de Amigo and Phantasy Star Online. Come to think of it, most of my favorite games are Dreamcast games.

I’m always having to explain what Shenmue is whenever I say its one of my favorite games. Like many others, I am still waiting for Shenmue 3…

My bro, Ryo, bought us each our own Dreamcasts so we could all play Phantasy Star Online together. Damn, those were some fun times.

It’s hard to believe it has been 10 years since the Dreamcast launch. When I think of the Dreamcast, I think of my bro, Ryo, he was the ultimate Sega and Dreamcast fan. He used to keep all his receipts of Sega purchases in a small black book and boy did he have a lot. He gave me the opportunity to play all of these great games. If it wasn’t for him, I would have missed out. I miss him, and all the fun we shared all thanks to the Dreamcast.

(My dreamcast sits atop my desk waiting to be played. Maybe I shall play it to celebrate its 10 year anniversary…)

Dear Dreamcast,
Thank you for all the Great memories!

PAX is upon us once again!

The Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle, WA, just keeps getting larger every year. This year it is SOLD-OUT as they have set a cap on the number of attendees. Hopefully this will ensure that people won’t be turned away from panels due to overcrowding.

This will be my third year in attendance, missing out on last years festivities, I plan to see and do as much as I can this year. The weekend will definitely full packed with concerts, meeting friends, panels and little things in between like Freeplay and Tournaments!

For those of you who are going for the first time, here are some random tips:
- With all conventions there will be lineups so be ready to wait in them and have some consideration for your fellow gamers by using deodorant.
- Don’t forget your DS! You can use it in place of a lighter at the Concerts!

Big Buck Safari

During a trip to the arcade the other day, we decided to get our shooting game fix with Big Buck Safari. The object of the game was to shoot as many buffalo and the occasional “Trophy” animal (which varied from elephants and rhinos to giraffes and lions), in the allotted time. The more buffalo you hit the better your score…and mine was pretty dismal at that.

Shooting the buffalo…the ones with the horns..wasn’t as easy as I thought. I was constantly making the mistake of shooting cows which resulted in me being benched till the next round. Seriously, the’ cows looked like buffalo!! I did have a couple good rounds, but overall I wasn’t very good at the game. I hated that I needed to reload after every shot. Damn shotgun. One of my favorite weapons in Q3A..but not so much here.

What really surprised me though wasn’t how bad I was, but the cut scenes with the sexy hunter chicks. That was totally unexpected and pretty amusing if you think about it.

Since when did hunters look like that?

If you didn’t see the Big Buck Safari at the top, what kind of Bonus game would it be?

Would they really make you want to play the game? You only see them for a few seconds at the instructions screen before you go to the next round of shooting. There were about 5 or 6 different models in the game and they basically just did sexy poses with the shotgun. It reminded me of that video (strip) poker game. But in this one, they didn’t lose a piece of clothing for each buffalo you shot down. Sexist? yes. Still an entertaining shooting game? Yup! Give it a try if you ever see it at your local arcade. I’m sure you’d be just as amused.

… thanks to Game Guard Error: 114.

The NCSoft booth at Comic-con was giving out free beta codes for the AION beta that took place this past wknd. I was very much looking forward to playing because it took place during our long weekend (Monday off from work) but unfortunately, my machine wasn’t able to launch the game. After clicking “Play Now”, I would get a message dialog titled Game Guard Error: 114. The message itself was in unrecognizable characters.
Siigh. After searching for solutions and trying most of them except for re-installing AION – it took me so long to initially install it on my machine that by the time I did, the Beta would have been over – I gave up. No AION for me, I thought. What a waste of a beta key

My bro was able to install the game on his desktop, a 64-bit XP machine, and I heard that the game was supposed to be more compatible with Vista, the OS on my machine. But there have been other compatibility issues it seems, as a few other friends have strange errors pop up on them while playing or other start-up issues. I did, however, get a chance to create a character on his machine and play for the last hour of the Beta.

I spent little time creating a Mage character and walked around for a bit, trying some quests. I only had enough time to level the character to Level 3. But so far, the graphics and music are what impressed me most. I’m not happy about it not working on my machine though. Hopefully, they will do something with Game Guard come release time.

It was neat to see what happened at the end of Beta (which ended today at noon). Some players were running around frantically hehe. I didn’t get much time to play but the game if it will ever work with my machine seems like one I’d be interested in playing more. But between the Beta and the release they’ll purge our character data, so it’s not worth leveling up too much before the game comes out.

Best Con Evar = Comic-con!

Returning from my vacation, I went into work and as I approached my desk I noticed a newspaper clipping below:

I looked over at my co-worker and laughed, asking him which of them put that newspaper clipping on my desk.. He said, “We did the math and figured you were at Comic-con with all the nerds and geeks. Did you go?” You should have seen his expression when I said “Yes!” Hahaha.. My co-workers knew I would be away for a few days, but I think I only mentioned I would be going to LA and San Diego. My coworkers continue to be in denial about how geeky and nerdy they are, but you do NOT have to be a geek or nerd to attend Comic-con. You can merely go as the fan you are and easily find something entertaining. It is truly fun for everyone!

The anticipation one feels as you approach the San Diego Convention center increases as you see the masses of people, some dressed up (or dressed down, depending on the character), armed with their Comic-con bags that will soon be filled with free swag. Everyone is snapping photos of all the cosplayers and laughing about how cool this is and/or complaining about how hot it is. Damn it gets hot in San Diego in July. But don’t worry, as soon as you step foot in the Convention center, you can breathe a sigh of relief – thank goodness for air conditioning.

San Diego Comic-con International is one of my favorite conventions. Introduced to the con about 3 years ago, this was my third time at the convention and it is worth it every year.

Star Trek has a smaller presence here than most other franchises, but it is only here that I’ve met/seen so many Star Trek Actors, like Nichelle Nichols (Uhura from the Original Star Trek) who I’ve been looking forward to meeting for the last few years. Flashback to Comic-con ‘06, my brother and I were late to the convention because we stayed at a hotel outside of the area and stopped for breakfast. I missed my opportunity to see Nichelle at the Diamond select toys booth and hoped I would still get a chance to meet her sometime in the future. Lucky for me, she was there this year She is such a sweet lady! She was promoting her new online web comedy – The Cabonauts.

This year, I didn’t spend as much time in panels as I did in previous years. Many of the panels were at full capacity and had to turn people away. Comic-con passes are limited, and usually sell out long before the convention date. My older brother used to always remind me to get my comic-con passes as soon as I could. You can’t even buy them on site, but even so there are always way too many people in attendance.

HALL H – Getting there early doesn’t even guarantee you entrance…
The lineup for the infamous “HALL H” has got to be one of the worse lines ever. For one, it is outside, with nothing to shield us from the sun. Second, the line up is insanely long. Sure you can chat with other convention-goers or play DS to pass the time, but most of the time everyone is burning in the heat and resort to fanning themselves with the free fans they hand out throughout the exhibit hall. They don’t clear the hall between panels so people can camp out in Hall H the whole day if they choose and that way they are guaranteed a good seat. The night before the LOST panel, there were already people lining up!! One guy brought air mattresses and exclaimed “hell yeah” as he passed us. Hahaha!

I myself have braved the lineup a few times although I’ve never camped out overnight for any panels, I have spent over 2 hours in line to get into a panel. Sometimes I got in to see half of the panel but other times I missed the panel entirely. This year we didn’t even get into the Iron Man 2 panel! Boy was my uncle disappointed. My cousin and uncle were waiting there for more than 2 hours. It was y cousin’s first comic-con and they didn’t even get to see what Hall H looked like inside At least we were able to get into another panel in the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton where the lineup was indoors and there was free water! Yay!

What’s with Hall H? Why so popular? This is where all the major film companies show off their upcoming movies never before seen clips/trailers and usually the director and cast are on hand as well. Hall H is also the place to put other things that they know will definitely draw a crowd (like LOST) because it’s the biggest space there. It’s funny though, most of the films I see there get so much hype but upon release are disappointing – examples: Spirit, Spiderman 3, Mummy 3.. That doesn’t mean it isn’t interesting to hear about the film from the director themselves, and what it was like working on the film from the cast. I saw part of the District 9 panel with Peter Jackson and Niell Blomcamp. This movie sounds great! Can’t wait to see this one come August 14th.

Other panels I saw were the Gears of War panel – Gearsiverse, a panel on Zoe Bell’s film “Angel of Death”, and Star Wars Spectacular (which talked about everything – Star wars in concert, force unleashed and the animated Clone Wars). I also saw a Peter Jackson and James Cameron panel where they discussed the future of films.

As I mentioned above, I didn’t catch many this time around. I spent most of my time in the massive exhibit hall, playing video games, taking photos, shopping for a few little things (while trying to stay within budget), getting autographs, lining up for cool swag, trying to win stuff and checking out all the comic book artists.
There are a few booths I like to stop by each year like Gama-go (for sweet tees) and Tokidoki. These fans are cute and come in handy in the heat…

At Comic-con 2006, I remember seeing little Emotes toys. Each of these little characters represent an emotion. Since then, they have introduced a few books and a comic, for teens that aims to prevent self-injury and suicide by teaching them that everyone feels like this sometimes and that there are other ways to release their frustrations. Emotes aren’t just about the cute plush toys, but a good educational tool for teens. Everyone knows teenage years can be tough. Check out emotes on the site

Comic-con 09 has come and gone so fast. It’s already been over a week since the convention (Apologies for a late post). Despite what my co-workers think, it is clearly a convention for “lovers of all things fantastic” and everything you see there (excluding Hall H lineup) is fantastic! From the cosplayers to the swag, the actors available for autographs to the amusing and entertaining panels from your favorites in TV and film, Comic-con will always be the convention to beat in terms of content. I was very fortunate to get the opportunity to attend this convention each year, and definitely look forward to coming back next year!

Packing for the trip home, I smiled at the realization that I got some great stuff this year. I collected a lot more swag than other years, stuff I actually like and other stuff worth selling or giving out as gifts. I’ve given out a few gifts already and they were well received!

Tribble agrees that Comic-con was exhausting!

It’s Comic-con Time Once Again!

Summertime for me usually means lots of sunshine, smoothies, hangin’ out and vacation, which includes going to a few conventions. And there is definitely no other convention like San Diego’s Comic-con. It’s lil sister Wonder con is similar but doesn’t even get close to being at the scale of what Comic-con is. There are so many people I know who would just love to sneak into my luggage to get the chance to attend Comic-con. Cosplayers galore, lots to buy, even more to see, this is the place where nerds, geeks and dorks can be themselves and where fans can be as obsessed (in a good way!) as they like, because, hey, it’s Comic-Con! This convention is made for us.

Some photos from Comic-con 2008:

I’ll never forget the first time I stepped into the San Diego Convention Center for Comic-con 2006. My brother and I drove from LA and got there midday. I remember being so relieved that we finally found a parking spot..even if it was a bit pricey. We had to walk a few blocks to get there and everywhere we looked there were people with passes around their necks and Comic-con bags. The city was transformed into a place where geeking out was expected. After snapping a few shots of the convention center signs, we stepped into the air-conditioned convention center and breathed a sigh of relief. Man does it get hot in San Diego at this time of the year.

To get a full day out of your Comic-con experience, we had to brave the lines, and rush to each panel we wanted to see. We also left eating for after. This is probably not a good idea though, as we were feeling pretty light-headed by the time we got a chance to eat. We also left the shopping for our last day there (Sunday).

Some of the highlights from my 1st Comic-con experience included the Kung Fu Extravaganza, meeting and getting an autograph from Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar – from Star Trek: TNG), walking through the enormous Expo Hall hunting for bargains, playing Mario kart DS in the lineup to Hall H and the Klingon lifestyles presentation – a yearly tradition at Comic-con apparently – while eating pizza like savages. This is what happens when you are soo food-deprived.

Last year, was my second time at Comic-con, coming in a little bit more seasoned, more knowledgeable about what to expect, I tried to plan my schedule a little better and made sure to include some food breaks here and there. I went with my other brother this time and it was his first time at the convention. It’s always cool to see newbies reactions to the whole comic-con experience.

Some highlights from 2nd Comic-con experience included meeting more Star Trek Actors, playing Street Fighter IV, winning a free stargate toy without even doing anything, shopping at the Capcom booth and many other booths in that expo hall and the Lost Panel and just Hall H in general (included Pixar’s UP, The Spirit, The Mummy- I saw Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh!!! and more).

This year, thanks to the recession, I will be trying to stay within budget at Comic-con. Which will no doubt be a challenge, seeing how I still love little toys and trinkets, still intend to get some autographs ($20/autograph of Star Trek actors) and will be buying some comics, GAMA-GO and Tokidoki Shirts for sure.

Oh Comic-con, you are sucha great convention! I look forward to spending time with you! Can’t wait.
Follow me on twitter (http://twitter.com/debuggirl) for comic-con updates, and I will of course try to post some blogs as well.
